Introduction
A weight distribution hitch (WDH) is designed to help distribute a trailer’s tongue weight more evenly between the tow vehicle’s axles and the trailer axles.
When a trailer places substantial weight on the hitch, the rear of the tow vehicle can squat while the front axle becomes lighter. A properly selected and adjusted weight distribution system uses spring bars to transfer some of that load forward, helping restore the tow vehicle’s ride height and maintain more balanced weight distribution.
For people towing larger campers, equipment trailers, cargo trailers, and other heavier trailers, a weight distribution hitch can be an important part of a properly matched towing system.
But a weight distribution hitch isn’t automatically required for every trailer. Whether you need one depends on the vehicle, trailer, tongue weight, hitch rating, and manufacturer’s requirements.
Important: Always follow your tow vehicle, trailer, and hitch manufacturer’s specifications. A weight distribution hitch does not increase your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity.
